The company’s founder, Azerbaijani businessman Tahir Garayev, and his brother have reportedly escaped, according to sources.
They are said to have flown to Dubai, in addition to their residence in Moscow. Garayev has faced scandals before, with the Istanbul prosecutor’s office issuing an arrest warrant for him and other Coral Energy executives.
The warrant followed a complaint by Turkish firm CYE Petrol, which stated that Garayev’s actions caused $40 million in damages.
What exactly prompted the OMON “mask-show” raid in Coral Energy’s Moscow office remains unknown, but it is unlikely that police would conduct an operation of this scale with the detention of the company’s entire management without serious grounds.
